The late Buck Owens is not the only natural resource to come from Bakersfield. California's San Joaquin Valley serves as the backdrop for Bakersfield-based independent refiner San Joaquin Refining, which refines locally produced heavy crude oil. The majority of its crude oil is derived from Kern County. San Joaquin Refining's refined products are used in the development of adhesives, asphalt, electrical insulation, lubricants, paints, plastics, printing inks, rubber, roofing materials, and other items. The company also owns more than 90 storage tanks capable of storing 800,000 barrels of crude oil.
